A great way for kids to have fun and learn new skills that could save a life!
Tessa Fisher is delighted to be running Rookie Lifeguard courses for children this summer in Ibiza.
So, first of all, what exactly is a Rookie Lifeguard course?
Well, this is the junior award scheme of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) which is a drowning prevention charity. Through it, children are taught skills that could save themselves or others in an emergency situation. The awards contain valuable survival, rescue and sports skills as well as life support (CPR) and water safety elements. The best part is that the kids have a great time whilst learning as we include lots of fun and games to get the skills across and keep them involved and motivated!
The teaching takes place at your own villa pool and the duration of the course is entirely flexible and dependent upon the progress of each individual child. It is possible to complete a course in 4 hours in one day, or over the course of a few days, there is no set time limit.
The Rookie Lifeguard course consists of Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, with three levels attainable in each. These RLSS-certified awards are internationally recognised, affording any student the opportunity to continue their award progression when they return home after their holiday.
It is a sobering thought that around 400 people die as a result of drowning every year in the UK, and that drowning is a leading cause of death in children in the UK. To this end, the Rookie Lifeguard course is something all parents should consider for their children. After all, it could mean the difference between life and death, as Rookie Lifeguard, Tyler, found out. At 12 years old, Tyler had completed Bronze Level 3 and, thanks to the skills he’d learned, was able to successfully rescue a 3-year old from an emergency situation in a swimming pool when he was on holiday.
The Rookie Lifeguard Course is available for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old – the only requisite is that they need to be able to swim 25 metres of a recognised stroke.
The course fee is 800€ for two children with a charge of 200€ each for additional children participating, this includes a Progression Book, Certificate and Badge.
